Sheldon Celebrates VE Day 80

9 May 25

On Thursday, Sheldon students and staff gathered by the flag pole for a special ceremony to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of VE Day. Students also received a lesson on VE Day during their year group assemblies and KS3 students had a focus on WWII in their history classes. We asked students from both the lower school and Sixth Form to do a reading at the ceremony and invited all of our cadets, scouts and guides to wear their uniforms. The ceremony honoured the soldiers, sailors and airmen who gave their lives during the war, as well as reflected on the feeling of joy experienced by those at home when victory was announced. It also asked that we gather in thanksgiving for those who continue to strive for peace across the globe. At the end of the ceremony, we held a minute’s silence to honour the memory of all the lives lost during the war.

Together we honour the past and celebrate a future built on unity, hope, love and peace.

Thank you to Miss Frater for organising Sheldon’s VE Day commemorations and to all of the students that participated in the ceremony. We’d also like to thank Mrs Rahn in our DT department for her lovely display of poppies and bunting around our flag pole.

Having worked in many schools I can say that the environment at Sheldon School is one of the best I’ve ever seen. The standard of education and relationships I built with teachers were exceptional.
