Remembrance Day 2024
We had a beautiful ceremony this morning to mark Remembrance Day. Thank you to everyone who participated, especially to Mrs Rahn and our DT students for the amazing display of poppies at our flagpole.
Our ceremony included remarks from Headteacher, Mr Lynch, as he laid our Remembrance wreath before inviting the whole school to participate in two minutes of silence.
Today we join people from across the country, and indeed around the world, to pause and remember and honour those who sacrificed and lost their lives in conflicts around the world. Remembrance Day is not about history, it's about learning from the past so that mistakes are not made again. When we we wear our poppies or take the minute silences, we remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can live in peace today. Unfortunately, wars are still taking place across the world and today enables us to remember the men, women and children who continue to have their lives affected by wars across the As students we honour their memory by standing up for what's right, by showing kindness to those around you and continuing to commit to a peaceful way of life.
We also had readings of In Flanders Fields by students in Rhys, Rufus and Sion in Sheldon Sixth Form. Amberly and Tilly in Year 8 joined history teacher, Mrs Tillotson, for a reading of Land Girl while Mr Goldsworthy, Mrs Frater and Alice in Year 8 performed The Last Post and Reveille. Mr Lynch also led those in attendance in reciting The Exhortation and Kohima Epitaph. Our cadets, guides and scouts also held a parade around the school grounds to mark the end of the ceremony. We invited all students to take a moment as necessary to pay their respects at the flagpole.
Assemblies this week will be led by our history faculty on the theme of Remembrance Day. It may be a nice opportunity to speak with your children about what they have learned and to share your own family's history. We would like to say thank you to all the staff, former students and all those in our Sheldon community who have served for their sacrifices and we honour the memory of all who have lost loved ones.
