Sixth Form Young Driver Assembly
Thank you to the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service for speaking to our Sixth Form students this morning about young driver and passenger safety. This programme helps to prepare young people for life on the road, so that they can make positive choices as both drivers and passengers.
Through a series of videos, discussions and activities, our students learned about safe driving in a variety of situations. They learned about safely navigating country roads, the dangers of driving while tired or impaired, as well as common distractions to drivers. Mr Spiers completed the Reaction Time Test Challenge and showed that his ability to concentrate and react was significantly decreased when faced with distractions. Students were reminded to be good friends and to avoid causing a distraction as a passenger. While many drivers may need their phones to navigate, we were reminded to always use a phone holder and not to touch the phone while driving. It is also important to put your phone in 'Do Not Disturb' or 'Driving' mode so that you are not distracted by calls or texts while driving. Students were also encouraged to practice driving at night with a responsible adult before heading out with friends after dark.
We hope that all of our students take this advice seriously, so that they can stay safe as they learn to drive. Along with the presentation, students were given a link to sign up for regular advice for young drivers.
