World Book Day 2025
Happy World Book Day! Our faculty and staff have dressed up today to share their love of reading and celebrate their favourite books. World Book Day encourages more children and families to find the fun and enjoyment in reading, because reading for pleasure changes lives. A recent study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development with evidence from the National Literacy Trust and BookTrust found that reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income.
At Sheldon, we love reading and feel very lucky to have wonderful library full of the latest releases and children's literature classics. Students can access our library catalogue on the Sheldon Portal where they will be able to search what we have in the library, read up on our book of the week and even get recommendations. If you are ever looking for advice, speak to our Librarian, Miss Punter. She'll be able to help you find your next great read!
Thank you to everyone who dressed up today! We have seen lots of Hogwarts students wandering the halls, a few wizards and elves, crayons, dictionaries and even a giant peach. The PE faculty have been quite a menace and Humanities seems to have fallen down the rabbit hole. We've had some very creative interpretation of books with our Pastoral Leads getting in their feelings and our English faculty dressing up as poets featured on the GCSE curriculum. Congratulations to the DT Faculty for winning the most creative costume award from Mr Lynch.
Can you figure out the book based on the costumes? Bonus points if any of our GCSE students can name the poems featured by our English Faculty!
Our World Book Day costumes are based on: James and the Giant Peach (PSRE), The Day the Crayons Quit (DT), Lord of the Rings (Leadership Team), Harry Potter (Mathematics and PEA), AQA Poetry Anthology: Power & Conflict (English), Beano (PE), Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Humanities), My Mixed Emotions (Pastoral Leads), Where's Wally (Admin Staff), Dictionaries (MFL) and The Cat in the Hat (BEC). These books and more can be found in our school library.
