Y12 Politics Students Visit Parliament

13 Dec 24

Earlier this week our Year 12 Politics Students travelled to London to visit Parliament. This annual trip at Sheldon Sixth Form allows our students to learn from the heart of British government. Students had an opportunity to meet with our local MP, Sarah Gibson, who visited Sheldon during our General Election Hustings last summer.

Two of our students, Ellie and Maddie, prepared a recap of the trip:

After going through scrutinising security checks, we were welcomed in by an informative tour guide who escorted us into the House of Lords and House of Commons. Telling us about the MPs and their constituents, the guide took us through the layout of the Commons, pointing us to where Margaret Thatcher and other iconic leaders would’ve spoken. After the tour ended, we took part in a mock election where we had to debate our own policies and elect a leader. Following this, our Chippenham MP, Sarah Gibson, paid us a visit in which we interrogated her on local affairs. Overall, it was incredible to see where such massive decisions are made. Mrs Tillotson then took us to 10 Downing Street, seeing Westminster Abbey and Big Ben on the way. Afterwards, we visited the Supreme Court where such groundbreaking cases are debated and held a mock version of a real case. It was very interesting to sit in the same seats as those with so much influence.

We had an amazing day. Thank you to Mrs Tillotson and Mrs Venner for organising such an amazing day!

“My son has had a very enjoyable first year at Sheldon."
